So you have pain and have heard about Electro Therapy (TENS) and want to know more about what it is, what it does and how do you get one?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator
When you think of pain think of how pain is transmitted. You have 31 pairs of nerves in your spinal column and they are responsible for sending messages from different parts of your body. Pain messages are electrical and are called Nociceptors.
The Tens unit is attached to your body with sticky electrode pads that are wired to the tens device. When the device is tuned on it sends gentle electrical impulses through your skin. The impulses confuse the pain messages and you do not feel the pain in the same way.
This is called the “Gate Theory” as it closes the pain gate that allows the Nociceptor to travel to your bran. It essentially confuses the pain message and you do not feel it as a pain message.
Will it work for every one?
No, but it does work for most people. Individuals react differently to the therapy. Many people will use the device for an hour and get hours of relief after the device is off. There are others that get relief while the unit is turned on.
So how do I get a TENS unit to see if it works?
These are prescription-only devices that must be ordered by a Physician or Nurse Practitioner. Your health care professional may order one without your asking, If they do not you can ask them if they think that it may help your pain. Not all practitioners think of TENS right away, remember they are bombarded with pharmaceutical reps asking for their business all day long. The DME’s that provide TENS service are not as visible to physicians so you may have to ask.
Once you have the prescription what is next?
I will speak only for P M Medical Products, Ltd. We usually get the script and patient demographic information faxed from the health care provider’s office. A call is made to the patient, usually the same day, and we set up a time for the delivery and inservice (training). We can deliver to your home or to your physician’s office, whichever is most convenient for you.
The delivery consists of the following:
An explanation of how the device works is done first. Next we place the unit for you to see how it feels and to understand its function. While the unit is on we do your paperwork and continue to explain and answer questions. Once you are comfortable and have your questions answered the delivery is done. It usually takes between 20 minutes and 45 minutes depending upon how many questions you may have.
Following the delivery we call the next day to be sure that you are doing well with the unit and have no questions. During the delivery you will be given our phone number in three places to assure you that you can call us at any time with questions.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a noninvasive, drug free method of controlling pain. TENS uses tiny electrical impulses sent through the skin to nerves to modify your pain perception. TENS does not cure any physiological problem; it only helps control the pain. In most patients it is effective in reducing or eliminating the pain, allowing for a return to normal activity.
