Retain Your Independence with a Walking Aid

Impaired mobility doesn’t have to interfere with your independence. Incorporate the right walking aid into your life! Some users temporarily depend on a walking aid while recovering from a medical procedure or an injury. Others may need one to compensate for a decline in balance or strength due to a medical condition or simple aging.

The good news is that your walking aid can help you live an active, full life. The right solution for your unique needs depends on a combination of your goals, ability, and environment.

PM Medical Products has assembled this short buying guide to outline your options. Discuss your challenges and your desire to stay mobile with your physician, and get help from the experienced staff at our shop in Wilkes-Barre, where we also serve our neighbors in Scranton and Allentown, Pennsylvania. Your satisfaction is our first concern.

Canes

For affordability, portability, and ease of use, it’s hard to beat the classic cane. In addition to the traditional style with a simple curved crook or angled handle on top, there are offset handle canes with a bend in the shaft near the handle, to center the user’s weight better. Other options include the quad cane, which contacts the floor with a four-legged base, and the folding cane, which can be a handy backup mobility device.

Rollators

A rollator has four legs with wheels and relies on hand brakes for stopping, and may be called a wheeled walker or rolling walker. Some users find it onerous to push a walker and prefer a rollator, although others object that a rollator is too mobile since it rolls very easily in any direction. Most models have a padded seat over a small storage compartment, making them very convenient for traveling around the house or complex.

Walkers

Walkers are four-legged metal frames that the user lifts and slides forward while walking. They are often outfitted with wheels on the front two legs. These devices are very useful to help people maintain their balance. They’re light and fold quickly for easy transport.
